I remember when I was little, passing by a white wall and feeling compelled to draw something on it.You know you’ve been there – passing by a freshly poured sidewalk, tempted to pick up a stick to scribble. I wonder if the Egyptian hieroglyphics were just that, some ordinary person compelled to leave their mark on their “white wall.” Because they couldn’t help it. Because they just had to. I imagine this is how simple ideas become legends, mysteries and enigmas.
The following video by directed by Matthew Bate is an excellent depiction of how an urban symbol came to be, and how, despite many attempts, theories and false rumors, its mysterious origins still remain unknown.
